The Dame Nellie Melba Room

The Dame Nellie Melba Room

  • En-suite

  • Free Wifi

It was originally known as the Keyhole room when the Banks Family purchased it as they had no history to it. They have since found out that Prince Edward stayed in this room in 1917 when he came to thank the Australian people for their participation in the first world war. It was his mother Queen Victoria who suggested that he stay at her old friend, George Lansell’s house. You will notice on the front gate a crown which represents that Royalty has stayed at Fortuna.

This room is known as the Dame Nellie Melba Room as she was a regular visitor to Fortuna. Her piano takes pride of place in the main foyer of Fortuna. She once had George turn off the stampers as she couldn’t sleep. However the townsfolk of Bendigo requested that they be turned back on, as they in turn couldn’t sleep. It had apparently become quite soothing for the townsfolk to hear the echoes of George’s stampers crushing the quartz at night.

The original bath is now a museum piece. You will notice its lovely marble features and other elements that were way before their time.

Prime Ministers and Governor Generals have stayed in this room and now it’s your turn! We hope you enjoy your stay!
